The head halter is not a muzzle, but rather a dog training device that is used on dogs that like to nip, bite, and show aggressive behavior. Unlike a muzzle, where the dog is not permitted to do anything that comes naturally, this is just used as a stopping tool.

But the head halter on the other hand is a dog training device that wraps loosely around the dogs neck and mouth and when you pull on the leash, the noose tightens closing the dogs mouth and when you let up, the noose loosens giving the dog the ability to open its mouth.

This combined with verbal instructions will help the dog learn when it is and when it’s not appropriate to show aggressive behavior.

Using a Head Halter

Using the head halter as a dog training device allows you to have better control of your dogs head and to close its mouth when they are displaying unwanted behavior. At first the dog will fight to have the head halter put on but this is a fight you must win to show your dog that you are in charge.

There is a way to make your dog submit to you by putting your hand on top of the dogs muzzle and applying pressure but if your dog is having problems nipping then it’s not suggested you do this without the halter in place.

Once the device is in place then try placing your hand on its muzzle. The reason a dog will submit is because in wolf packs the dominating wolf always puts pressure on the muzzle of the submissive wolf. Therefore, this move will mimic the dominating wolf and cause your dog to be submissive.

When doing the submissive technique and your dog puts his paw on your arm it’s not because he is trying to be cute or shake hands, what he is really trying to do is to remove the submissive hand away from him; he is trying to gain control you.

When to Use the Head Halter

As a dog training device you can use the head halter anytime of the day or night but do not leave your dog unattended with the head halter on because he can become tangled and hurt himself.

While using the head halter use the word or command “NO!” in a stern, commanding voice, don’t yell but be strong with your dog, let him know that you give the orders and that you are in control, not him.
