The Different Types of Collars Used as Dog Training Aids

rief article will discuss the different types of dog collars used today as training aids, and will discuss the benefits of each.

The Plain Collar

The plain everyday collar is the simplest collar to start with. These types of buckled collars, however, are quite useless for dog training aids because they are mainly for identification as these collars are used to hold identification information. To use it for a training aid would be futile because a dog can easily slip out of this collar.

Martingale Collars

These types of collars are good dog training aids because the Martingale collar is a type of choke collar but with limits. It is made to slip over the dog¡¯s head and lie flat on the back of his neck; when a leash is attached to the collar it will tighten around the throat.

It may seem cruel, but once it is adjusted correctly the collar will not continue to tighten around the dog¡¯s neck; it will only tighten enough to prevent the dog from slipping out of the collar.

These types of collars prove to be good dog training aids while you are out on a walk if your dog has a tendency to get excited and try to wiggle its way out of the collar. It will teach your dog that it can not do this and soon you will find that you dog has learned this valuable lesson.

Limited Choke Collars

Like the Martingale collars, a ¡°limited choke¡± collar is also good to use as dog training aids. This collar is a nylon strap with rings attached at either end. One ring is attached to a flap in the material that will only allow the collar to tighten to the size of the dog¡¯s neck. This collar is commonly used by dog sled teams.

The Choke Chain

You might as well put the dog on the ¡°rack¡± down in the dungeon with this type of collar. It is effective, but it is not suggested that you use a choke chain for dog training aids.

The choke chain slips around the dogs neck and by jerking on the collar it causes the chain to literally tighten around the wind pipe and choke your dog. Some disciplinarian owners still believe in using a choke chain to help create an obedient dog, but most have long abandoned usage of this archaic dog collar.

This chain can also be kept tight around the dog¡¯s throat making the dog uncomfortable and teaching your dog to be aggressive. There are very few trainers who believe in the use of the choke chain because they disagree with the use of punishment and fear for dog training aids.
