Is A Pet Grooming Career Right For You?

Many people don¡¯t participate in pet grooming beyond trimming their pet¡¯s nails or brushing their fur once in a while, or taking them to see a pet groomer. If you find yourself imagining what the neighbor¡¯s dog would look like with some better trimming, or you and your cat both seem to like the weekly brushing, maybe a pet grooming career is a good idea. Choosing a career in pet grooming can hold plenty of rewards, whether it¡¯s from doing something you love or from seeing a pet owner happy with the job you¡¯ve done.

Have The Right Attitude

Of course, someone pursuing a pet grooming career should be a pet lover, and not just someone who thinks pets are cute to be around. While your pet might be well behaved, you might encounter ones who are not in your new career in pet grooming. You need to have a sense of patience for working with shy or fidgety pets, and a desire to make a pet beautiful makes a big difference between doing a job that¡¯s merely adequate and a job that¡¯s wonderful.

Also keep in mind that through the course of a pet grooming career, you may find pets that bite or scratch. If you¡¯re not aware and careful during the grooming process, you could end up needing a set of stitches. A career in pet grooming means that you are willing to take those risks and are willing to be careful enough to prevent them.

Getting Your Education

The key to a successful career in pet grooming is a good education, and as with all forms of education, the quality of this education is important. While some places will advertise self-taught courses in pet grooming, you will benefit more from a pet grooming school or an experienced teacher. Most pet grooming schools aren¡¯t regulated like other vocational schools, so it¡¯s up to you to determine the quality of the education. A good rule of thumb is to pick the school with the longest course possible, since a long course in pet grooming means the most information and the most practice.

Remember that pet grooming is a skill that needs to be developed and you won¡¯t be good at first. Learning through a good course or apprenticeship to a groomer is important, because not only will it lead to practicing your craft, but you have a guide that can warn you against common mistakes made by new groomers. With a willingness to learn and a love for animals, though, anyone with enough desire can start a successful career in pet grooming.
