Dogs, just like people, can suffer from hearing problems or be completely deaf. Some dogs have been born deaf, while other lost their hearing later on (due to a disease or an accident). Most people think that a deaf dog is useless, as it cannot be properly trained. However this not true – a deaf dog is as good as any other dog and it can become greatly trained with the correct deaf dg training program.

Deaf dog training includes various training techniques and which ones you will use is completely up to you. Here is some information about general training approaches to a deaf dog.

Your dog might has a hearing disorder, however It can still see and smell. Actually, a deaf dog usually has better sight and smelling sense than a normal dog as these two senses compensate the hearing problem.

Deaf dog training process may take longer than the training of a normal dog. this is mainly caused by the fact that it is more difficult to catch and keep your dog’s attention in an environment full of natural distracters (such as at the park and even your own yard). You should start the training lessons in doors in a familiar area free of distraction and than gradually increase the difficulty level by introducing new distracters.

You can use verbal commands accompanied by body signals. Your dog will not be able to hear what you say but it will soon start t recognize the hand signals you are giving.

You can use some of the ASL (American Sign Language) signals for giving commands to your dog. Choose signal that are recognizable and easy.

The fact that your dog is deaf does not mean that you do not need to praise it for good work. Food praise always work as well a specific hand signal to say “Well done!”. The same applies for giving negative feedback to your dog.

If you feel uncertain, you can train a deaf dog, than do not just give away the dog. Seek the services of professional dog trainers that can help you in training your dog. They will not only give basic training to your o but will also instruct you how to communicate with it and continue his training. What deaf dog training requires foremost is a lot of love, patience and care and you will see positive results one day.
