Dog obedience training is a major issue if you want a steady and pleasant relationship between you and your dog. The fact is that it is not that difficult to teach your dog of basic obedience as well.
Dog obedience training consists of various training lessons designed to teach your dog how to obey your commands. It might be something simple – as teaching your dog to come when you call him (or her). It can be something more complicated such as not to bark when you walk him out in the morning or how to chase cars of bicycles.
Whatever is the case you should prepare yourself first. Read some information about dog physiology (well, just some brief introductory information is enough) to get the idea how your dog intercepts the world. This will give a clue what should be your approach and what is likely to expect from your dog in certain situations.
Borrow advice and training exercises for each specific obedience command that you will teach your dog. It is always best to rely on tried and tested techniques rather than just taking chances.
You can start with the obedience lessons in a quiet and familiar place – your living room or your yard. It will help your dog to master the commands in a place free of distractions. Once you see your dog responds properly increase the difficulty level and try the same commands in a place with more distractions – such as a park or on the street.
Initially you will have to stay very close to your dog and prompt him to do the right thing. After some time you should start to increase the distance in order to teach your dog that he should do what you say no matter how close are you. You can even try to hide yourself right after you give the command. Your dog should keep it in this case as well.
Try to put your dog in many situations – giving always the same order of commands (like sit is always followed by stay) can play a tricky part in the future. Your dog should learn to obedience regardless of the order of the commands.
You will soon discover (amazingly) that dog obedience training has more to do with you than with your dog. Sometimes you may even wonder why it is called dog obedience training as it is in fact dog owner obedience training. Some of the most important things for you to remember are:
stick to short easy command words
always use the same word for the same command otherwise you will confuse your dog
always praise your dog if he did something the way you want it – it is this simple thing that will teach your dog to obey you
